I bought one for 5 bucks and it had two leaves. It now has about 20 within two months and it’s stationed in my bathroom. We love hot showers and so does he(plant)
Wow, I'm glad that I stumbled onto your tutorial. I have recently purchased a cutting of a red veined prayer plant. I had it in a glass of water for weeks. I would regularly change the water and used both tap and bottled. I purchased a root booster off of Amazon and would occasionally add a small amount. It finally took root and I waited until a few more formed before putting it in soil. It does look a little weird because it is only one leaf sitting in a pot. I have transferred it onto a heat pad and grow lights. After seeing this I will take it out of the grow lights. This has been the catalyst for my new love of plants.
The BEST prayer plant video ever made. Anyone who wants to grow these plants can watch this and learn/grow. Thank you for all of your knowledge and expertise!
One of my marantas had a little infestation problem, little lice like white bugs. I trimmed it all the way down cutting away all the leaves where they nested, and It grew back beautifully! Very strong and beautiful plants.
I grew these as houseplants in Northern Ireland in the 70’s 😊 now living in W Australia and want to grow them again and relive the 70’s 😆😆Thanks for all the info your videos are very watchable .lots of info very well presented 💕👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This is my fav kind of plant, and I have collected 10+ different ones over the past 4 years. Sometimes they flower, but even if they do not flower, they are still so beautiful. I love calatheas so much. :)
Very informative video. I just started having house plants after my daughters funeral. This was such a great help. I will be watching more of your videos. Thanks for what you do!
My prayer plants do really well in my bathroom window, (indirect light). They love the moisture in the air when we shower. It's a tip I learned from my dad who had a plant live beyond 30 years in his bathroom.
I have no window in my bathroom so I put mine in the kitchen. It's been blooming non stop since Jan-Feb it is August now & still blooming. I have never had one bloom like this before. I love it though!
@@debraolson7553 can I ask if you have a window in your kitchen? I don't have a window in my kitchen or bathroom and I'm not sure if its a good idea to put mine in either room without a window
I have a Prayer Plant that I Love that my mom gave me a cutting from that she had for years and her plant is so big. I love the time lapse video of the Prayer Plant
Thank you so much for such a detailed and thorough explanation. It was very helpful as my Maranta plant seemed to be dying on me. Now I know why it’s unhappy and on my way to sort out the problem. Bless.
Yeah mine flowered too. One morning I got up and little pinky flower was there. The feeling was amazing. I really did not expect flower from my prayer plant.
I love your videos! I recently got a Calathea lancifolia and, after watching its behavior for a day or so, thought the leaves were drooping due to it being thirsty. I've since learned it's a daily pattern and now, I am used to the leaves making noise as they shift and readjust every day. It's a fun plant!
I am so glad you mentioned the tap water being an issue. I wasn't sure why my Calathea Ornata was getting a few crispy edges. I am going to try distilled water.
Thank you for pointing out the details about the dormancy!none of the guides I read online have mentioned anything about a dormancy and I've been so worried about my prayer plant as when I got it it was just two little leaves. The one leaf yellowed and wilted away and I snipped it back to just above its node and so now it's literally just a single leaf in a pot.i was worried that if that leaf went away the plant must likely wouldn't recover and knowing that there's always a chance of it just being dormant and coming back definitely makes me feel a bit better
THANK YOU. So far, you are the only one who actually said they like low-medium light...I'd seen 'indirect' light on the other sites and was wondering why mine wasn't doing too well...near a lamp :s So thank you!
New subscriber. So informative. I just recieved my prayer plant yesterday and I forgot about them folding and noticed it this morning. Loved the time lapse.
I’m so in love with the Calathea I just bought mine a few days ago I’ve got it in my bathroom with stays at 55-65% humidity & quite warm cause I like it that way .. I’m really hoping I can keep it alive thanks for the amazing video

Summer, just found your channel and I'm in love! My plants are like little rays of sunshine around my home and it makes me so happy! It's wonderful to finally find a channel that has someone who loves plants as much as I do! Thank you!!
Just came across your channel tonight for the first time and I'm enjoying it immensely. It's so much nicer listening to someone discuss the care and requirements of houseplants than just reading the basic, generic info on the plant tags we find shoved into the pots when we buy them at our local stores. Especially this one..I just bought one of these a few months back, and I've followed the instructions to a T, but it's not thriving at all. I'm thinking now, after watching this vid, that at least part of the problem in lack of humidity - it's February in Maine, not much humidity in my home right now!
Thank you for this video. I have really good fingers for plants and get also Orchids, Cactaceae and all types of „Divas“ into bloom, but with the Marantaceae I decided „never again“. My instinct said that it doesn’t work with them, if i forgot them to water. All other plants in my appartement love it, that there is a change between dry and moist but this ones doesn’t work with this; even one dry weekend can kill them, they never came back beautiful…
I just got a lime green maranta and I am really happy that you have a video about them. Your channel is one of the biggest reasons I wanted to get a houseplant :)
I guess that I never saw this video. I'm sure that Linda read these wonderful comments, or that her lovely Daughter read them to her. Yes, I still miss her very much. Besides her plant collection, she collected elephants, so that when I see an elephant, I imagine that she is saying 'Hi.' You'll be surprised how many elephants you'll see now. Thanks for this video Suzette and for the uplifting moments you gave to Linda along the way. ❤
I just discovered your channel and I have to say that you are the one who explains with reliable and clear sentences. I couldnt find any informing videos even in my own language (Turkish) like it. Thank you and keep going :)
this video is really helpful. my maranta was so healthy when suddenly it's leave started to curl in.. and eventually died. i tried to google and find out whats wrong and didnt exactly come to a conclusion. and currently my other prayer plant is going through dormancy. i really thought it was dying and transferred to another place with different light conditions and humidity. after being literally dead for weeks it has started showing so much of growth. thank you for this video. so helpful and learned so many new things about this plant.
I thought that the defenbauchia and lily were dying, it was the winter season lacking light, I gave the plants some new soil and transplanted a few. The plants are happy after settling in. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Summer.
My makoyana is constantly moving and being noisy! I hear it folding and shuffling it’s leaves all night long! I love them so much, I’d suggest that if you can provide humidity in some way to get a prayer plant
Get a humidifier or put a tray with pebbles and water below the pot, just make sure that the pot's bottom is not directly in contact with the water or you're going to have a problem with root rot.
It is definitely worth to do a video depicting dormancy period among tropical plants. Some key features may tell us if the plant has decided to go dormant or it is simply dying, and we must distinguish the two. Most house plants we buy are tropical and most people would expect them to be evergreen while this is not always the case. Some tuberous plants like Achimenes and Sinningia must have their dormancy period while others like Alocasias can remain active as long as conditions are right.
@SummerRayneOakes. Oh thank you so much for this video Summer!! I purchased a really pretty variegated Prayer plant and I've noticed that the leaf tips are browning. I have it away from a southeast facing window, I've been misting and watering it with tap water that's been left out for 24-48hrs and I have it on a pebble tray for extra humidity. This was SO extremely helpful. I went and bought one of these as my first houseplant just as you described. I just thought it was pretty, but I didnt know anything about it. Months after it's still looking pretty, but it has some leaf burn. I think I might not be watering it enough. Thanks for the info!
I clicked on this video because I thought the Prayer plant looked lovely. Turns out the two houseplants I recently bought are Prayer plants. I have Stromanthe and Calathea Zebrina. Very helpful to know that the type of water you use can affect them. I've been using tap water and the Stromanthe is doing great, but the Calathea is starting to look dull and the leaf edges are turning brown. I will start using filtered water and hopefully it will perk back up. Thanks for the advice :-)
Bought a prayer plant out of B&Q and it kept 'super growing' as think it was more than just one plant in one pot........ so had to keep cutting it back. Now I have repotted it and split it into two plants. So both are now sitting on the window sill. Hopefully will now see these two grow and flower; as just read they ''flower''.

Hi...I am new to your channel. Laura, from Garden Answer told us about your videos. So happy she did because I love house plants. And this Prayer plant is one that I have enjoyed. But didn't know much about. So thank you for this info. ❤ Look forward to your other vlogs. Have a great week. 💛🌱🌷🌿🌻🍃🌸🌞
I have the prayer plant on the left backside of your table and I can neglect that bby for a few weeks and it does fine, then the other one I have (which is right next to it, in a seperate pot) Cries after 3 days of no attention qwq
I have found that if you buy those Globes self waterers either in glass and now I found someone Amazon in plastic they really help keep the plant evenly moist and the plants love them. I had a pinstripe and I almost lost because I was giving it plenty of humidity and when I first got it I was careful to make sure it was watered correctly. It was right next to the humidifier but for some dumb reason I forgot to water it needless to say it's struggling to stay alive. It has the glass self watering globe in it so hopefully it'll survived my neglect. I bought a medallion about 3 months ago and immediately put a water and globe in the pot along with the plant. It is now doing fantastic there are no dry spots on the leaves
Thanks a bunch for this fabulous and informative video, Summer. My huge calathea’s leaves were curling & I thought it needed more watering. I’ve now moved it to another position and turned the humidifier on. Cheers
Summer..this was my all time favorite video of all your videos; for two reasons. 1.) Very informative (now I have to run out to buy my first Marantaceae.) 2.) This was a great distraction from a very stressful week of dealing with Hurricane Irma. I had to bring all my outdoor plants indoors this weekend. Now I know what it is like to live with 150 plants like you!ha ha Thank you!!!
Living in Alberta I get a 5 gallon bucket of snow , let it melt and heat to room temperature and use that to water my prayer plants and they seem to be very happy with it.
You should do more videos like this where you explain a whole family of plants and the different geneses + general care. Im particularly interested in epipremnum and its relation to philodendrons and scindapsus. (Very sorry if my spelling is off lol) it seems like every different type of pothos is in a different family. Very confusing and id like to learn more. Thanks!
Thank u, realy thank u for sharing what you know and learnd. Really suprising of what i learnd and than see back in my plants. @@itsgoingtobeok-justbreathe4808 to keep it alive! you can do it during the winter months when our houses are super dry if you can't afford some time of terrarium syststem - or if you are traveling. will keep them happy
People used to cover their sofas with plastic. Maybe there was more to those sofas than we knew!
Great idea the cake stand...also those dommed cheese servers are also great to use for cuttings
This was such an informative video. Explained all details and understanding to these plants to help grow them
I kept mine in a plant pot but the next time I get one I’ll have it in a terrarium so I can control the humidity better💯
Thanks to your videos I've been able to confidently keep my first Calatheas and be successful from the beginning so a big big warm THANK YOU! I just got home from buying more varieties :)
Thank you. It feels like just listening stories from an older sister... great job❤❤❤
Love this little spotlight on a particular variety. Now if you cpuld do one for all of them, hee hee. i took notes and now i want to know about each of the plants. The way you present them is so understandable and I learnt so much. Love your videos.Thankyou.
Jon and Niina Morrell there's the calatheas, stromanthe, ctenanthe, and marantas.
Hi...I am new to your channel. Laura, from Garden Answer told us about your videos. So happy she did because I love house plants. And this Prayer plant is one that I have enjoyed. But didn't know much about. So thank you for this info. ❤ Look forward to your other vlogs. Have a great week.
💛🌱🌷🌿🌻🍃🌸🌞
yes even i watched laura's QnA
Cheers
Love my calathea...the way it produces its new leaf
Thank you for your help, Summer! My prayer plant already looks better and I just found your channel a month ago!
Just got a prayer plant ... Thanks for the vocab New word "Genera"
Just came across your channel and im planning my next plant thank you for giving me such great information and education!
Loved your collection! I want these! Sadly these are not so easily available on the other side of the world. :(
Living in Alberta I get a 5 gallon bucket of snow , let it melt and heat to room temperature and use that to water my prayer plants and they seem to be very happy with it.
Best video about marantas and calatheas
Amaaaazing!!!! I love allll of the information you gave us! Thank you so much!
Thanks!
You explain sooo well! A big Thank you from Argentina
One of the best videos on plant care I’ve watched! Thank you! 🙏
